Gamma irradiation sterilization
is an extremely safe technology. The process
consists of exposing products in an irradiation
chamber to a source of gamma radiation. This
destroys harmful microorganisms while leaving the
products unaffected.
Gamma radiation is able penetrate all materials and
can therefore sterilize products in airtight
packaging. Unlike other sterilization methods, gamma
processing does not cause any significant rise in
temperature or leave behind any chemical residue.
Dosimeters are used to measure radiation exposure
and are inserted among the products to ensure that
the correct radiation dose has been received. The
reading of the dosimeters and issuance of the
certificate of irradiation takes only one hour.
Products can generally be released almost
immediately after this.
